These courses are designed to provide you the skills and knowledge needed to become more effective in your job. Some of the classes being offered are described below.
Initially designed for System, Program, and Design Engineers, this training is a presentation of the Identification and Detection of Aging Issues (EPRI 1007932) training program co-developed by Altran and EPRI. This interactive training course also has become an essential element of the license renewal process by providing effective training to the Aging Management Program owners. It reviews the significance of materials aging to license renewal and equipment reliability, the plant staff’s role in detection and management of component aging, performance monitoring as outlined in INPO AP–913, aging failure progression, leading indicators, and performance of effective walkdowns. This 6- module course provides the students with the overall knowledge and skills necessary to understand and identify component aging, as well as minimize its affect. While course length is dependent on the number of modules presented, the course structure also can be easily modified to respond to the specific training needs of the plant.
Associated EPRI products that are included in the training and provided to the students as aging management tools for their use in the performance of their job responsibilities include an Aging Assessment Field Guide (EPRI 1007933) and three Identification and Assessment Checklists: Mechanical Components (EPRI 1009743); Civil and Structural Components (EPRI 1011224); and Electrical Components (EPRI 1011223).
Protective Coatings Training
Altran offers a three-day comprehensive protective coatings training course intended for personnel assigned technical responsibility for the plant’s protective coatings and linings program. It is equally useful to personnel with job responsibilities associated with specification, application, and inspection of protective coatings in the plant. This course also can be used to support certification as a Protective Coating Inspector to the requirements of ASTM D 4537. In addition to addressing protective coating basics, the training is customized to address the requirements of the respective power plant by integrating an applicable plant-specific safety- related coating specification and safety-related coating application procedure into the training.
Analog Instrument Fundamentals
This one-day course, designed for plant system, component, and design engineers, reviews the basic fundamentals of analog control systems and component operation. Students of this course will gain an understanding of components such as square rooters, orifices, controllers, and I/P’s. This class will also review the basic operation of common flow control systems, level control systems, and pressure control systems. Finally, this class will review the use and benefits of various controller features such as gain setting and PID controls.
Digital Instrumentation Fundamentals
This one-day course, designed for engineers with an understanding of analog control systems provides students with an overview of the knowledge necessary to upgrade analog control systems to digital control systems. This course reviews the difference between analog and digital systems, as well as outlining the benefits and concerned associated with changing from an analog control system to a digital control system.
Flow Accelerated Corrosion
This one-day course, designed for System, Program, and Design Engineers, offers an overview of flow accelerated corrosion. Students in this course will learn the terms, issues, and conditions required to produce FAC as well as the techniques used to avoid related component failures.
This course, geared toward System, Component, and Design Engineers, provides the basic concepts of component failure analysis, supplemented with case studies and samples of actual failures. Included is a description of how to recognize degradation mechanisms, indicators, and stressors as well as fundamentals of analytical techniques. These failure analysis concepts provide a foundation for failure prevention strategies.
Altran can provide customized IST Training for your IST Staff Engineer and Operations personnel. Many of the IST Engineers and Consultants at Altran are members of ASME O&M Committees, Subcommittees and Working Groups for various sections of the ASME O&M Code “Division 1: Section IST Rules for Inservice Testing of Light-Water Reactor Power Plants” (ISTA, ISTB, ISTC, ISTD, App I, App II, App III) Altran can provide background for changes and improvements in the ASME OM Code where current clients are updating from the 1995 Edition through the 1996 Addenda of the ASME OM Code, to the currently approved requirements of 2004 Edition through the 2006 Addenda, as currently approved.

- Regulatory requirements in 10 CFR 50.55a requiring Snubbers to be tested in accordance with ISTD of the O&M Code ANII responsibilities have been removed
- The required calibrated range of a Digital Test Instrument has been increased from 70% to 90%
- Additional guidance added a paragraph stating that Non reclosing pressure relief devices (rupture disks) used in BWR Scram Accumulators is excluded from the requirements of ISTC.

DC power is essential to the operation of utility substations and generating plants. DC power is supplied to microprocessor based relays, SCADA RTUs, indicating lights, auxiliary relays, interposing relays, circuit breaker trip coils, circuit breaker closing coils, and circuit breaker charging motors, motor operated valves, emergency pumps, annunciators, and other components. This course is designed to demonstrate the process used to size lead acid batteries and battery chargers. This course includes evaluating DC load profiles and DC system performance during normal system operation, during loss of AC conditions, and during design base conditions with and without concurrent AC system events.

Protective Relaying for Power System Protection
Protective relaying is essential to the continued operation of electric transmission systems. This three day course focuses on protection of electrical transmission systems and components vital to the continued operation of the integrated power grid. Motor Theory and Applications
Motors are used in numerous applications in power plants and industrial facilities. This course presents material applicable to induction motors, synchronous motors, DC motors, and variable frequency drives. This includes basic electrical theory, such as equivalent circuits, and practical application data, such as breakdown torque.
